In Mayan mythology, Itzamná is a creator god, and the ruler of heaven, day, and night (that would keep you busy!) Itzamná is typically depicted as a pleasant, toothless, old man with a large nose. That’s certainly not what this beautiful ink from L’Artisan Pastellier’s Callifolio line brings to mind!

In painting and watercolor, Mayan orange is usually a hot and intense, deep red-orange. Itzamná is hot and intense, but there are equal hints of brown in the deep orange, along with the red influences. It’s what I would call a zesty, tropical, sunset orange, and it’s quite nice!

Callifolio inks are consistent, well-behaved writers. There’s a bit of shading here, and a nice stroke halo that keeps the ink interesting and clean. Made to be safe in vintage pens, these are inks you can trust. It was nice on both coated and uncoated papers, and it works well in both finer and broader nibs. To get the most variety, I preferred it in medium nibs or larger on coated papers.

Callifolio Itzamná is a gorgeous burnt orange and a very nice writing ink, but it’s very close to Callifolio Inti. Inti is a bit lighter, so it’s a tough choice. Callifolio ink are extremely well-priced, especially if you order direct (L’Artisan Pastellier). They offer a wide variety of colors, as well, so don’t be surprised if you end up with more than a few! Enjoy!
