Based in Albi, in the south of France, L’Artisan Pastellier makes a wide assortment of inks in a variety of styles, using natural pigments and dyes. Callifolio inks are gentle, understated beauties that perform consistently well. This brand is one of the best buys on the market!

Callifolio - Cannelle - shades of color

Visually, this is a beautiful, buttery caramel. I think of cannelle (aka cinnamon) as having heavier red influences, but dried sticks are often a golden light brown that matches this ink well. This ink isn’t an aggressive shader, but it does shade consistently. The blend of lights and darks across strokes gives it a very organic feel to the eye. There’s also a subtle, but important edge haloing, adding depth and definition to strokes. The smooth blending of shades works well with the nicely defined edging, giving the ink great personality.

As a writing ink, Cannelle is easy and comfortable to use (a quality true to all of the Callifolio inks that I’ve tried). The flow is as buttery smooth as the color! It offers a decent level of water-resistance, yet it cleans with no additional effort. Strokes were sharp and well-defined on all papers, without any feather at all. Shading was slightly stronger on coated papers, but visible on all papers tested. Halo was strongest on Mnemosyne and Apica, but none showed on office copy. Drying was quick at 5-10 seconds on premium papers, and under 5 on office copy. For both writers and readers, this is a great ink.

L’Artisan Pastellier really know what makes a great ink. Their Callifolio inks are consistently beautiful, and a pleasure to use. If you like the look of Cannelle, don’t hesitate to pick up a few other colors, as well. They offer several size options, and all are extremely affordable. This is a great ink!
