Cypress Pens - Micarta

Pen Review: Cypress Pens Micarta Fountain Pen

Cypress - Micarta (Matching Grain)

What a pen! I have to thank my amazing wife for this wonderful birthday gift! I’m so happy to have my second pen from Cypress Pens (formerly known as Mr. Cypress) in Taiwan. This is the Micarta Matching Grain, and it’s a material I’ve long coveted. Predominately a rich scarlet, bands of reds, blues, greys, and creams give it a very sophisticated look.

Made from linen or cotton layers fused under pressure and heat within a resin/plastic composite, micarta is a very resilient material. Untreated, it can be subject to staining, but the team at Cypress solve this by generously coating the material with heavy layers of lacquer. This allows them to polish the pen to a silky-smooth perfection. It feels fantastic in the hand, very similar to the Kawari-nuri Blue Thread Urushi that was my first pen from this amazing brand.

The Micarta comes in three end designs (flat-top, domed, or the classic cigar). I chose the domed version, and absolutely love it. It’s perfectly balanced, and a gorgeous, wet, smooth writer. I couldn’t be happier! The domed version measures 149.6mm capped. It arrived in a bamboo box with magnetic lid, a 2-pen, leather pen case, and a pack of Tomoe River Paper.

If you’re thinking of micarta, you want to be careful if the treads are cut directly into the micarta material itself. Not only does that expose the material to the possibility of staining easily, it also is not the ideal material for the fine cutting that is required to carve the threads themselves. I’ve heard that over time, threads cut directly into micarta tend to deteriorate. Cypress avoids both risks by using ebonite for the grip section, and cutting the threads in the more durable ebonite.

I really want to thank their incredible staff, who went out of their way to assist on my order during Taiwan’s biggest holiday. I’m so impressed with the service! The pen was at my door in 28 hours! It arrived in a beautiful bamboo presentation box, and included a lovely, 2-pen leather case, as well as a pack of Tomoe River paper. I checked the price of the micarta in March 2023, and they offer it at US$178 plus shipping. At that price, Cypress may offer one of the best values out there! This is a company doing everything right!
