De Atramentis Multipulciano - ink drop

Ink from wine?! This definitely blends two of life’s great pleasures! Something tells me that this idea was born from a blurry Friday night, but whatever the inspiration, De Atramentis uncorked some intoxicating beauties in this series!

De Atramentis Montepulciano - delicious wine reds!

Montepulciano is from De Atramentis’ twenty-ink wine series. Each ink is made with the wine that gives it its name. These are scented inks. It’s not a synthetic odor, but the gentle, authentic scent driven by the ingredient wine. What a pleasure!

De Atramentis Montepulciano’s contrasting shades

As a wine, montepulcianos are traditionally slightly dry, medium-bodied reds. However, as an ink, it definitely has a luscious, wet flow, and I’d call it more full-bodied in color. It’s a very classical, red wine red. There’s very nice shading both light and dark, too. You’ll like the look on both coated and uncoated papers. I’ve included a swatch comparison of De Atramentis Montepulciano and Chianti (from the same series) in the final image below.

De Atramentis Montepulciano - swatch card and drying

This is a nice writing ink. It flows well and is smooth on the page. I didn’t have any problems on friendly papers, but there was a slight feather and some bleed-through on cheap copy paper. Stick to nice papers for best results. There was a nice dark stroke edging that gave the ink a decisive feel and strength. Drying was a bit long on coated papers, but average overall.

De Atramentis Montepulciano is a beautiful ink, and it performs nicely on premium papers. This is a really interesting series. I love the concept of inks from actual wines! It’s a large series, but twenty of the twenty-one inks are reds of some variety. I think that’s a bit much to be honest. I recommend choosing a few rather than the whole series. Check out my review of De Atramentis Chianti for a look at the non-red in the series.
