Private Reserve Infinity Violet Fountain Pen Ink Review - Ink Drop

Private Reserve - Infinity Violet - Ink Drop

This is the second of two inks sent to me by Private Reserve from their Infinity Ink series. The Infinity series inks are made using their Extended Cap Off (E.C.O.) formula. This allows you to leave the cap off as you pause while writing, without worrying about hard starts from the ink drying out in the nib and feed. In both inks that I’ve tested, it works brilliantly! Laying the pen down uncapped for five, fifteen, even thirty minutes or longer is not a problem.

Private Reserve Infinity Violet Fountain Pen Ink Review on Cosmo Air Light paper

Private Reserve - Infinity Violet - on Cosmo Air Light

Our ink here is Infinity Violet, and I really like this particular color. It’s a lovely, bold, and expressive medium violet that rivals many of my favorites in the range. On some coated papers, deep swimming blues break the surface and add additional complexity to the confident violet base color. I think Private Reserve really chose well. I think this is exactly what a lot of people are looking for in a violet or purple ink.

Where Infinity Turquoise was slightly dry, Infinity Violet is neutral leaning wet. It’s a very comfortable ink on the page and flows smoothly. The E.C.O. formula keeps it writing effortlessly, too. Drying ranged from very fast on uncoated papers to average or better on coated papers.

Private Reserve Infinity Violet Fountain Pen Ink Review on Rhodia paper

Private Reserve - Infinity Violet - on Rhodia

In terms of feather and spread, it’s a nice ink overall, but I had mixed results. On Midori MD and Cosmo Air Light, it really looks fantastic. Strokes were crisp and sharp, and the coloration was complex. It also did well on Mnemosyne. On Rhodia, Kokuyo, and high-quality, uncoated copy paper there was a bit of spread, but it was mostly minor and acceptable. However, on Apica (uncoated), it feathered more than I like. I used a Jowo medium for testing, and you’ll probably have far less concern in a finer nib.

As you can see from my writing samples, there isn’t a lot of shading. Although the swatch on Cosmo Air Light showed a bit of sheening on the most saturated edge, I didn’t find any in writing. This ink is all about the color, and the freedom to forget about the cap.

Private Reserve Infinity Violet is a very attractive ink, and not worrying about capping and re-capping as you write is an unusual, yet significant advantage. On compatible papers, I can see myself using it often. The Infinity Inks come in 60 ml bottles, and you’ll find them for US$20-$25 at many popular retailers. There are six colors currently available, and I’d bet there will be more colors in the future. If you like violets and purples, this is an ink you’ll almost certainly enjoy!
