We’re nearing the end of the Mudpack collection with this sixth review from the 7-ink mini-series. This is Muddy Sand. It may look somewhat simple at first, but this is a complex ink with writing characteristics a bit unusual for a Robert Oster ink.

The chromatography really tells the story. When it hits the page, this is a very rich, milk chocolate brown with strong orange elements on display. After a few seconds, the peach-coral richness fades, and more dominant yellows rise to the surface. There’s lots of nice shading, but in a range more restricted compared to many shaders. This gives it a slightly muted, powdery appearance that helps showcase the yellow undertones. It’s intriguing and pleasant, but not a “wow” type of beautiful.

This is a very nice writing ink. It presents no issues with feather or bleed on friendly papers, maintains a clean, professional impression, and dries quickly. However, it’s the flow that really stands out for me. It’s wet and juicy in a way that few from Robert Oster tend to be. You’ll be pleased with the writing experience.

Performance alone makes this an easy recommendation. The color is interesting, but it won’t grab everyone. I think it has a lot of potential for water brush surprises, too. If you like what you see, you’ll like Muddy Sand. Enjoy!
