I think Taccia Sabimidori from Taccia’s Ukiyo-e series is one of the most interesting inks of 2020. It’s from their Ukiyo-e series, which is a beautifully presented collection honoring four masters of traditional Japanese woodblock print art (ukiyo-e). Sabimidori (rust green) is one of the four inks inspired by the ukiyo-e master, Hokusai. Most people will know Hokusai for his most iconic piece, The Great Wave Off Kanagawa.

Taccia - Ukiyo-e - Sabimidori - Color Range

Visually, this ink is a roller-coaster of color; it’s simply amazing! In the bottle, and as it first hits paper, it’s a deep cobalt blue that changes to indigo. As it dries, it gradually shifts to a deep, faded forest green, but remains blue in light areas. True to the name, the ink develops a gorgeous rusty red and yellow sheen that coats areas of pooling and the edges of written strokes. What an ink!

As a writing ink, Sabimidori is strong in all categories. It’s wet, with a smooth, comfortable flow. Strokes were razor-sharp on all papers. There’s nice shading with bluish light areas, and green darks. The sheen that accents stroke halo in writing keeps profiles well-defined. Drying was 15-20 seconds on premiums, and 5 seconds on office copy. This is a great writing ink.
