Let’s take a look at Lost, a beautifully complex, multi-shading ink from Korean ink maker, Wearingeul. It’s from the two-ink Demian series, which was inspired by the 1919 novel by Herman Hesse. Lost expresses the wanderings and psychological conflicts of Demian’s protagonist, Emil Sinclair.

This is a beautiful, gentle, multichromatic ink that changes and alternates from a dusty, pastel cerulean blue to a greenish-blue with strong, pale yellow undertones. On coated papers it shades nicely, allowing yellows to rise to the surface and swirl within bold, dark blue edgings. Coated papers maintain more of the blues, while uncoated papers nurture a more aggressive green-blue. It’s nice on both, but the color profile is more unique on coated papers.

Wet and smooth on the page, Lost is a nice writing ink. Shading promotes the mysterious yellows that make it so interesting. The dark edging gives it a very clean and crisp stroke profile, and drying time is about average. All of this makes it a very nice, very usable writing ink.
