Pióromaniak - Salty Sun
Wow! This ink is something special! This is Słone Słońce from Pióromaniak in Poland. This is a Fall 2020, limited edition ink. The name Słone Słońce translates to “Salty Sun” in English - an interesting name for an interesting ink!
Visually, this ink is full of charm. The base color is a gorgeous, furry, red rust-orange brown. It’s rich and proud, and immediately catches the eye. There is some nice shading, and lighter areas glow, as if touched by rays of sunshine. Most of the shading is darker, and quite interesting. As it dries, the reds deepen outwards developing chocolate browns. In the splatter, areas of pooling are circled in a sheen of the same deep browns. This creates a beautiful, wide, burnt halo that drifts deep into the stroke, blending towards the center.
As a writing ink, Salty Sun performs beautifully on premium papers. Strokes were clear and very well-defined. All premiums showed shading, but Rhodia and Kokuyo were particularly nice. It’s usable on office copy, but tends to feather. For the most pleasing results, I recommend saving it for premium papers. I really only have one complaint. Drying times were consistently 25-45 seconds on coated papers, which is longer than I prefer. Uncoated papers were better at 5-15 seconds. Despite this, I still consider it a great writing ink.
I definitely recommend Salty Sun! For non-shimmer inks, this is one of the most interesting and attractive that I’ve tried recently. Aesthetically, it’s quite captivating, and the qualities that make it so appealing, also make it very effective for readers. It’s easy to forgive the slow drying time, when an ink does so much, so well!
