Tono & Lims - Yuki - Ink drop

Today, we’re back in the world of Lims Lab with Tono & Lims Yuki, a winter 2020/2021 release. Like all inks in the Fixation series, this is a pigment ink, and it’s highly water-resistant. Yuki, in this case, is a Japanese word meaning “snow”, and is a fairly common female (mostly) name. I think it’s a lovely name for this beautiful, soft ink, too.

Snow of the right type, under the right conditions can have a subtle, bluish glow, and this ink simulates it well. Soft, and graceful, this is a beautiful, cool, pale blue-grey. It’s a nice shader on premiums, and shades most prominently on coated papers. This is both good, and bad. On some papers, light areas almost disappear making it difficult for extended reading. On others, it maintains enough contrast to let its beauty surface and still remain legible. Office copy doesn’t have much shading, but the ink really remains true. The splatter is really interesting. Pigment gathers, and a vibrant aqua-turquoise surrounds areas of pooling, creating the effect of seeing a Caribbean reef from high above. Don’t expect this in writing, but it’s beautiful to see.

Tono & Lims - Yuki - Amazing Variation!

As a writing ink, you need to experiment with Yuki, and stick to compatible papers and nibs. When you do, strokes are clean, and it’s a very nice ink. Shading showed on all six test papers, but edge halo was mild and only appeared on Kokuyo and Apica. Drying was fast at 10 seconds on all premiums except Rhodia (20 seconds), and 5 seconds on office copy.

Tono & Lims - Yuki - Light to Dark

Tono & Lims Yuki is a beautiful, soft ink, but it really needs to be paired properly, or it’s simply too light on the page for comfortable reading. I think it’s also a fantastic art ink, especially with its high water-resistance.
