What a gorgeous ink! 3 Oysters released the first twenty inks in the “Basic” series in the summer of 2025. In 2026, they began consistently releasing new additions to the line in batches of five, and the new colors include quite a few eye-catchers! They’ve also recently began making this series available outside Korea, so keep an eye out. This is Amethyst, and it was part of the five released in June of 2026.

I really like purples and magentas, and Amethyst blends the two beautifully. On some papers (like Iroful), you’ll find it landing firmly in the purples. On others (such as Rhodia or Tomoe River), you’ll find it harder to categorize as the red undertones result in more of a magenta. It really pops with a bright personality that makes you smile, but it isn’t garish. There’s green-gold sheening on the swatches, but in writing, I only found it on the most saturated stroke ends on a few of the papers tested.

I’ve found the 3 Oysters’ Basic series inks to be extremely good writing inks in terms of both performance and experience, and Amethyst is exactly that! Strokes were crisp and sharp without any hint of micro-feathering or spreading. This is a very clean ink on the page. Flow is very well-balanced. It writes effortlessly and has a luxurious feel that keeps you focused on the process and the content and nothing else.

3 Oysters specifically put out the word that they were looking for wider distribution partners, and that is fantastic news for those outside Korea. The Basic series is growing rapidly, and it’s the kind of series that should worry the competition. The 30 ml bottles are a true bargain! They have a nice wide opening for easy use with piston-fillers (unlike Diamine’s 30 ml bottles). They are also priced amazing well. Although the recommended price is KRW7,000 (US$4.75), in Korea, they actually retail for only KRW5,600 (US$3.95!) 3 Oysters have a lot of nice inks, but this series could be the one that really opens the global door. I couldn’t recommend it any higher!
