Kyoto TAG (Ltd.) - Usuhanairo

Usuhanairo is part of TAG Stationery’s Kyo No Oto series. Rather than the standard numbered edition in the series, this is a limited ink. This isn’t the only limited ink from TAG, but I’m not sure what they exactly mean by calling it an “Ltd” (limited) ink. When I first used the ink, I was a bit disappointed that it was not a bit more of an unusual color. However, I have come to appreciate the specific shade, and it fills a nice void in the brand’s lineup.

This is a nice medium blue with a slightly chalky, cottony appearance on some papers. It is this quality that I find quite attractive. You can see it well on Rhodia and Cosmo Air Light papers. It’s more solidly a standard medium blue on Tomoe River (old) and on Iroful. On Takasago Bank paper it has a brighter glow and more depth.

Writing experience is consistent with the newer TAG inks that I’ve tried. Rather than the somewhat dry feel that I traditionally think of with both Kyo No Oto and Kyo Iro series inks from TAG, this is neutral to slightly wet in writing feel. I was a fan before, but I appreciate what seems to be a recalibration towards a more standard writing feel. In terms of performance, TAG inks are always high-quality with clean, sharp stroke profiles. Drying was a bit better than average, too. Good stuff!

I was lucky and bought this bottle at their main store in Kyoto, but Usuhanairo should be available anywhere you normally find TAG inks. I’ve always appreciated the cool, modern aesthetic of the packaging and labeling. I also think their bottles are minimalist perfection. If you’re looking for a new blue to change things up, this is a great choice for office or fun!
