Zephyr Studio Shun Ran - Ink drop

Shun Ran (Spring Storm) is one of the original five inks from Zephyr Studio. Zephyr Studio inks are created in-house from Osaka’s Giftionery Delta stationery store. Lovers of grey inks are often loyal, but quite particular in the greys that catch their attention. I think Shun Ran has qualities that will please both the writers and the artists that love an interesting grey ink.

Ink Swatches on Cosmo Air Light and Tomoe River

Shun Ran is a cool, complex grey. In writing, I think it compares favorably to popular greys like Diamine’s Earl Grey. It’s a dark slate grey that lightens to a more smokey grey in lighter shaded areas. There is the slightest pink and purple undertone, as well. In more saturated applications, such as when using glass rods or brushes, it shows off its shading and a variety of sheening and hidden undertones. As you can see in my swatches, you’ll find brassy sheening, and on Cosmo Air Light, there are even subtle hints of light blue.

This is a very nice writing ink both in writing performance and experience. Shading is moderate, but consistent. Flow is comfortable in feel, and you can expect very normal drying times. Written strokes were sharp and clean, as well. This ink didn’t disappoint or provide any unwanted surprises in performance.
